Some of the local school marching bands and sports teams have a reputation for
coming out on top, and have one several state wide competitions, so it may be
worth heading to watch them at their game. A summer concert series is offered at
Armstrong Park in the Poe-Hobden Ampitheater. Nearby is the recreation center,
library, and city hall. Armstrong Park also offers a great kids' play area
called Kidsville, with jungle gyms, swings, and little hideaways where kids can
play hide and go seek for hours. There are a few spots to enjoy and learn about
plants as well. Frank Allen, a horticulturist, in conjunction with Texas A &
M, has several gardens which are research centers open to the public. You can
attend various educational programs on how to start and maintain your home
garden chemical free. Joe Pool Lake is also not far, where you can swim, ski,
sail, and fish, or enjoy the park areas surrounding the lake.
