Apple Valley, MinnesotaApple Valley is a twin cities suburb, about 17 miles northeast of St. Paul. A commute to St. Paul will take you about 30 to 45 minutes during rush hour, depending on your luck, and how close you are to Interstate 35 and highway 77/Cedar Avenue. Like the rest of Minnesota, Apple Valley can get bitterly cold in the winter, with average temperatures in the 10s (Fahrenheit). It's not unusual for it to dip below zero. The population numbers about 45,000. It's a fairly homogeneous community, with about 91% of the population white, and a scattering of other cultures and faces occasionally. Most folks are in the upper middle to upper class economic bracket, with an average household income of about $70,000, and an average family income of about 80%. Apple Valley has a magnet school called the School of Environmental Studies, where "gifted" students can concentrate on environmental studies. Three new elementary magnet schools recently opened. Apartments and Neighborhoods in Apple ValleyThe east side of Robert Street is a very nice area; however, there are frequent trains that run by here, so if noise is a concern, you may want to inquire about that situation. Some of the busier streets are Dodd Road, 24, Chippendale, and the southern part of Shannon Parkway. Palamino Drive is the most expensive area in the city, but on the outskirts of multi-million dollar mansions are rental properties. For the shortest commute, get close to I-35.Things to Do in Apple ValleyThe big attraction for residents and tourists alike is the Minnesota Zoo, featuring the Minnesota Trail, displaying animals who are native to Minnesota, and a petting zoo. It also has a marine center with bottlenose dolphins and other aquatic life. Valleywood Golf Course on 125th Street West offers lessons. There are a number of parks and lakes in the area. You can rent a cano at Farquar Lake, Keller Lake, or Lac Lavon. Or try the disc golf course at Alimagnet Park. |
