Rockville, Maryland

Rockville is in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, about 23 miles northwest of the capital. Everyone is not a D.C. commuter, however, as Rockville offers its own employment opportunities at such employers as Westat, Inc., Aspen Systems Corporation, Mid Atlantic Medical Services, and BAE Systems. Some people who work in Gaithersburg to the north also opt to live in Rockville and commute against the D.C. traffic. If you do need to commute into D.C., it can take about 45 minutes in off peak times up to two hours during the rush. For most people, taking the commuter rail into D.C. makes much more sense, so you may want to inquire if a rental is near a stop.

The population of Rockville is about 60,000. Most of Montgomery County, where Rockville is located, is fairly diverse and affluent by national standards, although the whole D.C. area is an expensive place to live, on par with other metro regions such as Boston, Massachusetts. About 70% of residents are white, 14% Hispanic, 13% Asian, 10% Black, with small percentages of other races and those of mixed race. Rockville has large and proud Taiwanese, Korean, Indian, and Jewish communities. The average income per household is about $74,000; for a family, it's about $83,000.
