Smyrna, Georgia

With 50,000 residents, Smyrna, Georgia is a city in Cobb County and one of the closest suburbs to Atlanta. Smyrna, Georgia boasts a revitalized downtown district and expanding upscale home subdivisions.

Smyrna, Georgia's origins date back to 1832, when settlers first arrived. The town went through several names - Varner's Station, Ruff's Siding, Neal Dow, Ruff's Station - but was incorporated as Smyrna in 1872. Smyrna also witnessed two Civil War conflicts, including one in which buildings, houses, and the covered bridge were torched by General Sherman. The bridge has since been rebuilt and is in use today.

In the 1950s, Bell reopened a WWII-era bomber factory in Smyrna and that helped drive eye-opening growth for twenty years, during which Smyrna's population increased by nearly a factor of ten. Smyrna's proximity to Atlanta - near the intersection of I-285 and I-75 - continues to drive expansion, and "The Jonquil City" (so named for the flower that blankets the hillsides in the spring) shows no sign of slowing down.

Smyrna Schools

Smyrna schools are under the aegis of the Cobb County School District, which carries the tagline "A Community with a Passion for Learning." Based in Marietta, the district is among the largest in the country with 14,000-plus teachers and administrators. In fact, the district is the county's largest employer.

Smyrna schools seem to be doing things right, too. Results from the 2006 Georgia High School Graduation Test demonstrate that Cobb students are among the state's best on writing metrics. In 2006, Cobb students also beat the national averages on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS).

Smyrna Parks

Smyrna has taken a proactive attitude towards its parks and gathering places, and that attitude has won the Smyrna parks and community the prestigious Urban Land Institute's Award of Excellence. The key attraction in Smyrna's parks and beautification is the "Village Green," a downtown area with a community center, library, city hall, showcase homes and a mixed-use retail and residential section. Other Smyrna parks feature jogging trails, pools, lighted tennis facilities and golf courses that are open to the public.
