Newark, Delaware
Newark is about halfway between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Baltimore
Maryland, and about 12 miles southwest of Wilmington, Delaware. It's population
is about 30,000, and the second A in its name should be pronounced like a
Bostonion pronounces the A in park. Main transportation routes are Interstate 95
and Delaware Routes 2 and 4. But why you would want the hassle of driving is a
mystery, with the excellent public transportation system in this region. The
SEPTA rail service has a stop near the University of Delaware that heads toward
Philadelphia or Wilmington. DART buses stop at the university and the rail
station and go to Wilmington, Elkton, MD, or the Christiana Mall.
Newark's population is about 87% white, 6% Black, 4% Asian, and 3% Hispanic. The
average household income in Newark is about $48,000, while for a family it's
about $75,000.
Apartments and Neighborhoods in Newark
If you want convenience, upbeat, and lively where you can easily walk to shops
and other places, you'll want to get close to the downtown area near Main Street
and the university. Some spots in this area may get noisy at times during the
school year. Three choices that are fairly close to this area are Park Place
Apartments on Lehigh Road, Towne Court Apartments on Thorn Lane, and OakTree
Apartments on Wenark Drive Suit. There are plenty of other choices as well, such
as Melrose Place Apartments on Melrose Drive, near White Clay Creek State Park.
Things to Do in Newark
One spot you should stop in downtown "just because" is the Deer Park Tavern.
It's popular with UD students for the same reasons most bars are, but it's got
some unique history. Built in 1851, it is reported to be one of the spots were
Edgar Allan Poe worked on his famous story "The Raven." Even if you're not a Poe
fan, it's just one of those places you have to say you've seen, like Primanti
Brothers in Pittsburgh, PA, or Union Oyster House in Boston.
Newark doesn't have just city recreation, however, head away from downtown, and
there are plenty of parks. Middle Run Natural Area, White Clay Creek State Park,
and Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area are all nearby, and offer
hiking, biking, and horseback riding. A little south is Iron Hill Park.
